In Nieman Reports, Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter Loretta Tofani writes about the challenges she faced in reporting “American Imports, Chinese Deaths,” an investigation into working conditions at Chinese factories that appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune last year.

Tofani was partially supported by CIR’s Dick Goldensohn Fund. Her series won this year’s Investigative Reporters and Editors’ Gold Medal, the Society of Professional Journalists’ Sigma Delta Chi Award for investigative reporting, The Michael Kelly Award given by the Atlantic Media Company, and numerous local and regional awards. It also was a finalist for the Shorenstein Center at Harvard’s Goldsmith Award for Investigative Reporting and for the Daniel Pearl Award for Outstanding International Investigative Reporting.

Tofani wrote a Backstory piece for CIR about how she came upon the story when she opened a furniture store that imported goods from China.
