Reveal journalists brought home five awards in the annual Society of Professional Journalists awards for Northern California.

  • Reporter Jennifer Gollan was named journalist of the year. She covers workplace safety, reporting and writing two investigative projects that also were recognized by SPJ.
  • Her investigation into deaths in the Bakken oil fields won first place in investigative reporting for print/text large division.
  • Christina Jewett and Will Evans’ exploration of counterfeit screws – which had been inserted into patients’ backs – nabbed first place for investigative reporting in radio/audio. The Reveal segment was produced by Marianne McCune and Delaney Hall.
  • Rape on the Night Shift, a collaboration among Reveal, the Investigative Reporting Program at UC Berkeley, KQED, FRONTLINE and Univision, won first place for investigative reporting in TV/video. Reveal’s Daffodil Altan and Bernice Yeung worked on the reporting team. Altan was a producer on the film, and Yeung wrote the text story.
  • Techsploitation, an investigation into visa fraud in the technology industry by Gollan and Matt Smith, won first place for explanatory reporting in print/text large division.
