This month’s member conference call will be with CIR reporter Kendall Taggart and the Tampa Bay (Fla.) Times’ Kris Hundley on their collaborative investigation, America’s Worst Charities, on June 18 at 11:30 a.m. PDT.
Taggart and Hundley used state and federal records to identify nearly 6,000 charities that chose to pay for-profit companies to raise their donations. They found that the worst charities paid solicitors nearly $1 billion over the past 10 years – money that could have been spent on programs for terminally ill children, disabled veterans, seniors and others.
According to the report, “For the worst charities, writing big checks to telemarketers isn’t an anomaly. It’s a way of life.”
Join our call to hear Taggart and Hundley dive into their findings, talk about the process of finding the bad apples out of roughly 1.6 million registered nonprofits and share the best ways to ensure your donations go to good use.
